Hebrews 6:19-20 connects the idea of hope and security with the metaphor of the anchor. The writer says that we have "Hope set before us as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm.” The anchor here refers to the hope generated by faith in the gospel which enables the believer to stand firm in the face of temptations, calamities and storms of life. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for the souls of Christ followers.

The shape of an anchor with a horizontal cross bar at the top simulates the shape of the cross upon which Jesus died. For early Christians, anchors were used as symbols instead of crosses so that one could identify him or herself as Christian in a covert manner during the period of Roman persecution. Therefore, the primary first century symbol for Christians wasn't the cross, it was the anchor. In early Christian iconography in the Roman catacombs (c. late 100-400 AD), one often finds on the tombs of the dead Christians an anchor as a symbol of their firm hope in an eternal life with their Savior.
